Derelict Site In L'Derry To Be Regenerated

Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland has announced funding of £250,000 for the regeneration of a derelict site at Inveroe Gardens in the Creggan Estate, L'Derry.

The funding will be used to transform the derelict site into a landscaped park, creating a vibrant, safer and attractive community space. The new park will also have a central meeting space connected by a network of lit paths, seating, trees and an extended car park area.

Announcing the funding Minister McCausland said: "This exciting project will provide a new green space creating a new focal point for local residents and helping to improve the quality of life of the community.

"The park will complement a previous investment by the Northern Ireland Executive through my Department at the nearby Healthy Living Centre and refurbished Synthetic Pitch.

"It will also make a valuable contribution to the regeneration of the area, removing an eye-sore and helping to address social exclusion and reduction in crime levels."

The project, which is being delivered and managed by the City Council of L'Derry is planned to commence in March 2014.

Mayor Councillor Martin Reilly said: "I am delighted that this significant funding from the Department will be used to benefit the people of the Creggan Estate and the wider community. News that this area, which is currently waste ground, is soon to experience a transformation into a safe, landscaped meeting space is widely supported.

"Under their Parks Development Programme, Derry City Council as partner and part funder of this project will be eager to ensure the plans are in place for delivery of this regeneration project and want to thank the Social Development Department for their Neighbourhood Renewal investment and for their vision for the Triax area."
