Sellafield Plant Is Years Behind Schedule - Ruane

Sinn Féin MLA Caitriona Ruane has said that she is concerned that the clean up of Sellafield Nuclear processing plant is years behind schedule and totally over budget.

Ms Ruane said: "I took the opportunity to raise with the Environment Minister Mark H Durkan a damning report from The British House of Commons Public Accounts Committee on the clean up of nuclear waste at the Sellafield Processing plant.


"Not only was the report castigating on the time lapse and overspend but it also raised serious safety concerns. This has an impact for the people of South Down who have seen cancer rates rise considerably since this plant opened.

"While the Minister acknowledged he had not yet seen the report he promised he will look at it however he must do more than that.

"The Minister must now raise the issue with the British Government given the fact that there is a proposal for expansion of the plant at Sellafield and ensure that the people of South Down are spared further contamination from the nuclear waste that is clearly not being controlled."
