Revenue Urged To Extend Local Property Tax Deadline

Labour TD, John Lyons, has called on Revenue to extend the November deadlines for returning payment submissions for the 2014 Local Property Tax.

Mr Lyons said: "Almost half the people liable for the LPT last year opted for a one-off single payment, either by cash, cheque, debit card, credit card or a single bank transaction. These property owners have received letters from Revenue, some only in the last day or two, seeking a postal return by next week.

"The current dates for making returns for these people are 7th November 2013 for paper returns and 27th November 2013 for online returns.

"I am calling on Revenue to extend the submission deadline for postal and online returns to the end of 2013 to give these people more time to choose the most suitable option for them.

"It is only fair to give people a bit more time if they have just received a letter from Revenue. It's also the first year they are being asked to pay the property tax for a full calendar year so I believe there should be more time to inform Revenue how they want to pay the tax.

"I am also very concerned that payments for debit card, credit card, cash or cheque payments are being taken out in a lump sum right away rather than in 2014.

"If you don't opt for a different payment method by 7th November, you have to pay the tax in its entirety by the end of November."
