DOE Revoke Waste Management Licence From Recycling Firm

The Department of the Environment has revoked the waste management licence for Straduff Recycling Limited in Co Tyrone.

Officers of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency's (NIEA) Environmental Crime Unit also carried out a search of the site and of another site in County Fermanagh,operated by Enniskillen Scrap Metal Limited.

The action was part of an investigation into a number of waste businesses and follows the removal of an exemption from waste management licensing for Enniskillen Scrap Metal Ltd of Killyvilly Road, Co Fermanagh, earlier this year. Straduff Recycling Ltd will have its Waste Management Licence revoked from 5pm on 8 October 2013.


Environment Minister Mark H Durkan said: "I want to encourage the licensed waste sector in Northern Ireland to be environmentally friendly and competitive. I commend the NIEA in its continuing actions against waste crime which will ensure waste is managed legally, protecting both our economy and the environment. Today's actions by NIEA will go some way towards helping to create a level playing field for the legitimate operators in this sector."

A major criminal investigation is ongoing into the activities that have taken place at a number of sites in Northern Ireland and into those suspected of organising them.
