Call For Govt To Respond To Climate Change Report

Sinn Féin's spokesperson on Environment, Community & Local Government, Brian Stanley TD, has urged the government, "to respond urgently and responsibly to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report".

The Laois/Offaly deputy said: "The fifth report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, published this morning should spur the Irish government into taking immediate action.


"The report raised the probability that most global warming was caused by humans to 95%, from 90% in its previous report in 2007.

"It is essential that the Irish government rises to the challenge. It must produce a Climate Change Bill that has agreed and binding targets so we meet our international obligation for 2020 and more importantly our obligations for 2050.

"Minister Hogan has produced a heads of bill that fail on both counts. We still have an opportunity to amend this bill. Today's report must be seen as a wake-up call.

"I urge the minister to act on this report and ensure we have binding targets in his final draft of his climate change bill."
