Dublin's Newest Allotment Opens

Dublin's Lord Mayor Oisín Quinn has opened Dublin's newest allotment, The Grattan Park Allotment, at Grattan Park, Grattan Crescent, Inchicore.

Grattan Park Allotment features 40 allotments on a 1,600 hectare site.

Lord Mayor Quinn said: "This allotment allows local people in Kilmainham and Inchicore to experience the pleasures of growing their own fruit, vegetables and flowers in an urban setting. It also involves locals in improving their communities and gives them greater ownership of it. Allotments are also a great way for young and old to mix and for the wider community to socialize. It is a wonderful facility and I congratulate the South Central Area of Dublin City Council who have done so much to make it happen."

The 40 allotment holders pay a lease of €120 per annum and a refundable key deposit of €50. They all responded to Dublin City Council's local advertising in May 2013.

Grattan Park joins the other allotments Dublin City Council has provided in the South Central Area. There are others at Blarney Park (Kimmage), Ballyfermot, Weaver Square and Braithwaite Street.

Overall, there are around 40 urban growing initiatives blossoming across Dublin on a variety of public and private sites, along with several new allotment sites.
