More than 100 participants convened in Dublin yesterday, Monday 17th June, to build Plan C – a plan for a new, low carbon, digital economy.
The workshop is the second Climate Gathering event, following on from an initial international gathering in the Burren in February.
Co-convenor of the Dublin Climate Gathering and Green Party Leader, Eamon Ryan said: "We have participants from leading ICT industries joining our Gathering because Dublin is just the place to find out how this new economy might work."
Representatives from Google, Intel, IBM, Solarprint, NDRC, Facebook, Twitter and Siemens will be joining former Climate Adviser to the UK Government, John Ashton and Green MEPs, Rebecca Harms and Claude Turmes, along with representatives from the European Commission and Dublin City Council. Following an Open Call to join the Gathering, participants will also include a number of second level students and local community activists.
"One of the lessons that we learned from our first Climate Gathering was that if we are to build this new economy, we must plan it with representatives from all areas of the community. Getting Plan C right makes the perspective of an adolescent just as important as that of the long-time climate expert," Mr Ryan continued.
The workshop will take place in inventive locations across the city such as the CHQ Shopping Centre in IFSC, the James Joyce Tower in Sandycove, the Baily Lighthouse in Howth, Tailors’ Hall, home of the Back Lane Parliament, the Mansion House and community centres in Terenure.
A public celebration will launch Plan C in the Round Room in the Manison House on Wednesday 19th June from 8pm. Speakers will include David Puttnam, Ireland's Digital Champion, Rebecca Harms, MEP, and Martin Curley, Director of Intel Labs Europe. Live music from Kila, Steve Cooney and Colm Mac Con Iomaire of The Frames will create the celebratory mood. Admission is free and open to the public.
