Over 20 teenagers from Dublin’s Pearse Street and Ringsend neighbourhoods descended on Lisheen wind farm, County Tipperary yesterday, 13 June, where Bord Gáis Energy hosted an event to celebrate Global Wind Day.
Global Wind Day is a worldwide event that occurs annually on 15 June. It is a day for discovering wind, its power and the possibilities it holds to change our world.
This year a group of male and female teens from Pearse Street Recreation Centre took part in the initiative to learn about wind energy. They also got up close and personal with the impressive turbines and participated in a bungee run challenge to demonstrate the power of wind energy.
Gary Thompson, Asset Operations Manager at Bord Gáis Energy said: "Bord Gáis Energy is delighted to be participating in a community initiative for Global Wind Day. This year we have invited teenagers from inner city Dublin most of whom had never seen wind turbines. Global Wind Day is about raising awareness about renewable energy and it’s important that young people today are educated and gain an interest in renewable energy at an early age wind is a key part of our energy portfolio and has an important role to play in providing sustainable and clean energy for future generations."
Global Wind Day is coordinated by the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) and supported in Ireland by the Irish Wind Energy Association (IWEA). Thousands of events are being organised in 29 countries to raise awareness of wind energy and show people how wind can be part of a stable, clean energy future.
