Temporary Water Treatment Plant To Be Installed In Roscommon

Fine Gael TD for Roscommon/South Leitrim, Frank Feighan, has welcomed the approval of €412,000 by the Minister for the Environment, Phil Hogan TD, to put in place a temporary water treatment plant to address the cryptosporidium problem on the Roscommon Central Water Supply Scheme.

Mr Feighan said: "This critical funding will enable Roscommon County Council to put in place a temporary water treatment plant, which will go some way towards addressing a problem which has caused great distress to domestic and business users, and especially those who have contracted infections from contaminated water.

"As Minister Hogan has noted, this proposal will ensure that consumers in the area served by the Roscommon Central Regional Water Supply Scheme will have a high quality water supply that is compliant with drinking water standards and which will have the capacity to meet current and future needs.

"The Roscommon Central Regional Water Supply Scheme Water Treatment Plant (Ballinagard Springs) is part of a bundle of four schemes with a total cost of over €15 million. This scheme will provide a permanent solution to the cryptosporidiosis problems in the area when the new water treatment plant is constructed at Ballinagard Springs. Tenders for these four regional water supply schemes are due to be submitted to Roscommon County Council by early July of this year."
