Bord Gais Networks Report A Rise In Gas Meter Tampering

Following a reported increase in gas meter tampering by Bord Gais Networks, Labour TD John Lyons has strongly urged gas customers not to tamper with meters and to only use registered repair staff for boilers.

Mr Lyons said: "Bord Gais Networks have reported to me a significant increase in meter tampering, particularly in premises fitted with gas pre-payment meters. This illegal meter tampering has led to an increased number of gas leaks – which put the residents of properties and their neighbours at risk of a gas explosion, fire, injury or even death.


"Recent gas price increases have certainly put pressure on family finances, and the increase in the number of customers switching to pre-paid metres shows how customers are trying to manage their bills. While I recognise these extra costs on families, safety in the home must always come first and I would urge people not to take risks when it comes to their gas meter.

"Bord Gais Networks also told me they are concerned about unregistered repair staff carrying out boiler works. If homeowners are approached by these workmen, they have to remember that they are not licensed or insured to do boiler or meter work."
