Ireland Reaches Record Level Of Wind Power - IWEA

Ireland recently reached a record level of wind power output according to the Irish Wind Energy Association (IWEA) has revealed.

A new record of 1,540 megawatts (MW), enough to power more than 1,000,000 homes was recorded.

A new all-island record was also set at the same time for energy generation, with levels reaching 1,917MW on the island, enough to power more than 1,246,000 homes.

According to figures from EirGrid, 1540 MW of wind generation corresponded to 36% of the demand at that time, which would be sufficient to power more than 1 million homes. The figures also show that the average wind contribution on this day was 39% of system demand, reaching 50% of system demand at times.

Wind generated over 1000MW for a sustained period of 40 hours starting at 1.45 am on Thursday 21st March and continuing to 5.30pm on Friday 22nd March meeting on average 40% of the Irish electricity demand over this period. EirGrid monitors and matches electricity generation and usage nationally every day.

IWEA's Chief Executive, Kenneth Matthews said: "These records show the growing importance of wind energy in Ireland, as sustained levels of wind generation are being created.

"Ireland is leading the way and showing that high wind levels are achievable, which brings with it great opportunities for investment and growth. The country is uniquely positioned to continue this momentum and reach ever higher records in the future."
