Minister Visits Limavady Regeneration Projects

Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland has visited a number of projects in Limavady benefitting from DSD funding.

The Minister visited the recently completed Rathbrady Beg Walk on the banks of the River Roe, which will eventually link the river, the town centre and the Roe Valley Country Park. This project, costing some £154,971, received funding of £133,000 from the Department’s Neighbourhood Renewal Investment Fund towards the provision of the walkway, canoeing infrastructure, storage facilities, installation of steps, visitor monitoring equipment and signage interpretation panels.

The Minister said: "This project is a good example of the benefits of joined-up government in action, with my Department working closely with Limavady Borough Council and the Rivers Agency to deliver this exciting regeneration project on the banks of the River Roe. Local residents and visitors can now enjoy this excellent new amenity making the river more accessible, safe and attractive for a variety of recreational purposes."

The Minister also took the opportunity to view a recently completed public realm scheme on Market Street and the improvement works which have been completed to-date on Catherine Street. These projects are being delivered in partnership with the Department for Regional Development's Roads Service.

The Market Street scheme, which cost £210,000, was fully funded by the Department for Social Development. The total cost of the Catherine Street scheme is £360,000, of which the Department is providing £310,000 with the remainder coming from the DRD Roads Service maintenance budget. Both schemes involve the installation of new locally sourced paving, street furniture, street lighting and replacement trees.
