A new prison is to be built in County Londonderry, the BBC has reported.

It is understood the build will be located at Magilligan.

Last year, a consultation process into the prison's future was carried out. The Prison Service had wanted to replace the building with a new jail closer to Belfast.

Justice Minister David Ford is expected to tell the assembly of his plans for the prison, as well as other jails later this morning. Mr Ford is due to tell MLAs that Magilligan Prison will be redeveloped over the next seven years. It is believed the prison will remain open during the works.


Construction is set to include a new accommodation block, a new central activities block, a welcome centre and independent living units for soon-to-be-released prisoners.

Speaking about the development, East Londonderry MP Gregory Campbell said the employment of more than 400 prison staff, as well further job creations in the construction industry, were key factors in keeping a jail at Magilligan.

He said: "It is the Northern Ireland Prison Service. It's not the greater Belfast Prison Service. There are a number of facilities in the greater Belfast area and it is important that prisoners and families and others have employment and visiting opportunities outside the greater Belfast area."

The project is part of a programme to upgrade prisons within Northern Ireland. Maghaberry and Hydebank are also included in the scheme. It is expected to cost about £200m.
