New Trial Urban Clearway Scheme Launched

A public consultation has been launched on proposals to introduce experimental changes to the urban clearway restrictions on three main roads in South Belfast.

Developed in cooperation with Lisburn Road Business Association, the proposals affect areas including Upper Lisburn Road/Lisburn Road from Black’s Road to Malone Avenue; Malone Road; and Stranmillis Road from Lockview Road to University Road.

Proposed is a trial scheme would see current urban clearway restrictions, from 8am to 9:30am and from 4:30pm to 6pm, apply only on the Belfast bound lanes in the morning and only on the country bound lanes in the evening.


It is hoped that these measures would ensure that the peak traffic movements would be maintained.

"This is an innovative proposal that has the potential to benefit traders and road users," Roads Minister Danny Kennedy said.

Adding: "In addressing this challenging issue I would encourage everyone with an interest in the area to take the opportunity to voice their opinion, mindful of the difficulties traders face in the current economic climate."

Any change would follow due legal process, the outcome of which is expected to take around 10 months including the public consultation period.
