Work To Begin On Dee Street Bridge

Construction News Image
Work is due to start on a £300,000 essential improvement scheme on Dee Street bridge over the Sydenham By-Pass and Bangor railway lines.

The existing brick walls (parapets) on the bridge have to be replaced for safety reasons. A new traditional metal parapet and high kerbs will be provided, along with footway alterations and other maintenance work. Work is due to begin on 22 February.

Regional Development Minister, Danny Kennedy said: "This is essential work as the current brick parapets are becoming unstable and must be replaced to improve safety for both road and rail users. The construction of the new parapets and high kerbs will help reduce the risk to travellers on the By-Pass and railway below should there be a collision on the Dee Street bridge.

"While Roads Service has made every effort to minimise any potential disruption, motorists should be aware that delays may occur and ensure they allow additional time when planning any journeys through the area."

The works will require the closure of Dee Street bridge to traffic for eight weeks from 22 February, with temporary diversions in operation. Night-time road and railway closures over the weekend of 22 and 23 February will also be necessary on A2 Sydenham By-Pass to facilitate demolition works.

Dee Street will be closed to pedestrians on 22 and 23 February but re-opened on 24 February and this access will be maintained for the duration of the works. The scheme is expected to be completed by late April 2013.
