Upgrade For Cavan Sewerage Works Approved

The Preliminary Report for the upgrade of Cavan Town Sewerage Scheme has been approved by Phil Hogan Minister of Environment, Community and Local Government.

The existing Cavan Town Sewage Treatment Works is situated at Keadue Townland, to the east of the town with a design population capacity of 22,000p.e. (population equivalent). The plant is currently at capacity which is severely restricting the town's ability to grow and develop.

Nicholas O'Dwyer, Consulting Engineers, Nutgrove Office Park, Nutgrove Avenue, Dublin 14 is appointed to prepare a Preliminary Report to assess the current status of the scheme and the future needs of the town. The Treatment Plant and Network are urgently in need of an upgrade in order to facilitate development of Cavan which is a Hub Status Town and also to comply with the its Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Discharge Licence.

All the Works have to be completed by December 2014 to meet the terms of the Discharge License granted by the EPA. The works involve increasing the capacity of the treatment plant at Keadue, initially, to 30,000p.e. and eventually to 55,000p.e. This will cater for a doubling of the population while still having capacity to allow for commercial and industrial development.

The works also include for improvement works to the pipe network in the town thus eliminating any storm overflows to the town river improving the river quality. These works are a vital part of the necessary infrastructure required to allow Cavan town to develop and expand.
