Sinn Fein housing spokesperson, Dessie Ellis TD has called on the Minister for Housing to begin working with Dublin City Council immediately on the reinstatement of the regeneration for the O’Devaney Gardens area.
He made his call following the official scrapping of regeneration plans which had completely stalled since the withdrawal of McNamara developers from the plan over four years ago.
Deputy Ellis continued: "The residents have been waiting 15 years for regeneration. It is wrong that they have to wait a day longer, it is wrong that they have had to endure four years of limbo since the departure of private developers from the plan but it would be a complete injustice if they have to wait years again for movement of regeneration.
"These families had to live in dilapidated and unfit housing conditions which are now over 60 years old. The area has been under resourced and neglected for years. There remain 44 families in the blocks and many families in accommodation meant to be temporary for the duration of the regeneration works.
"This government has done practically nothing to help the vulnerable and less well off in our society and this is a glaring example.
"They have done nothing to help the over 100,000 thousand people in the state who do not have sufficient accommodation to meet their needs and those of their family.
"The Minister must direct her attention to resolving cases like that of the O'Devaney Gardens regeneration project which are legacies of the property boom and crash. The residents of these areas have waited and can wait no longer."
