Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland has announced funding for the provision of the new Derrybeg Community Building in Newry.
The £190,000 project, which has been funded through the Department's Neighbourhood Renewal Investment Fund, involves the provision of a bespoke modular building comprising a main hall, meeting room, kitchen, storage room and toilets and associated site works and car parking.
Mr McCausland said: "The new community building will serve as a central venue for the provision of a wide range of activities, ranging from youth clubs to adult education classes. It will enable the Derrybeg Community Association to offer a variety of programmes for residents of all ages, within a safe purpose built facility."
The Minister paid tribute to the Community Association and the Newry Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership for their work in bringing the project to this final stage of development. He said: "One of the key success factors in bringing about regeneration is working through partnerships involving the public, private and community sectors. I would like to congratulate the Newry Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership Board for the role which they have played in this regard and the Derrybeg Community Association whose members have worked tirelessly to bring about this project. This clearly demonstrates my commitment to tackling disadvantage and improving the quality of life for all the residents of the Newry Neighbourhood Renewal Area."
