Call For 'Every Avenue To Be Explored' To Help Construction Industry

The Ulster Unionist Party has called for "every avenue to be explored" by the Executive to aid the recovery for the local construction industry in light of the recent major job losses in the sector.

Economy spokesperson, Sandra Overend said: "Decline in our construction industry has been evident since 2007, with the number of jobs in this sector taking a sharp dip in this period. We have sadly seen more evidence of this with the most recent job losses at Patton's.

"Job losses at construction companies are only the tip of the iceberg, as the rest of the supply chain also feels the bite. In comparison to the construction sector in Great Britain, it is clear to see that Northern Ireland is bearing the brunt of the downturn.

"To change the fortunes of the industry, it is vital that the Executive creates an environment which allows sustainable growth to take place. This is why the Ulster Unionist Party is calling for more investment in public private partnerships in infrastructure projects. The Investment Strategy sets out many of the advantages of working with the private sector. It also deals extensively with alternative funding options. I think that all parties can broadly agree that there is validity in looking at collaborations between the public and private sectors.

"The second vital component here is the timeframe in which alternative funding options will be brought forward. We know that there is no commitment to use alternative funding between 2015-2021, so can we use any of this potential finance now, when it is most needed, to help recovery and create jobs?’

"Our construction industry is failing and desperately needs a lifeline to protect jobs, it is vital that we explore every avenue available."
