Bord Gáis Energy has partnered with the Irish Wind Energy Association (IWEA) to run 'KidWind' – a four day renewable energy training course for secondary school teachers. The course is designed to provide teachers with an insight into the role and on the importance and value of wind energy in Ireland today and into the future.
This course is being delivered by the Dundalk Institute of Technology (DKIT) and aims to train and equip teachers at primary and second level to teach their own students about wind energy and to provide knowledge about the wind farm industry. The KidWind programme also includes a site tour to Lisheen wind farm near Thurles, Co Tipperary. As a result of this course, nearly 500 secondary school students will benefit directly as their teachers bring their learnings and experiences into the classroom.
The programme is primarily targeted at science, maths and geography teachers. Workshops will focus on specific lessons from basic turbine system concepts to the impact on wildlife and economics. Participating teachers will be prepared to teach students about blade analysis, blade design and wind resource assessment, amongst other topics. The teachers will come away with a wind turbine model building kit which they can construct in the classroom to demonstrate to their students.
Jason Scagell, Head of Assets & Trading of Bord Gáis Energy said: "Bord Gáis Energy is delighted to sponsor the KidWind initiative which will enable teachers to inspire the younger population to continue studies in wind energy. Bord Gáis Energy has made a large investment in wind energy and it is important to ensure that future generations are aware of the enormous benefits that this renewable energy can provide."
