The Old Courthouse provides a multi-purpose auditorium that is now established as a major venue for performing arts programmes, conferences and weddings. When the original plans for the Grade A listed building were developed, restrictions were placed on various aspects of the design, preventing the installation of mechanical plant on the exterior of the building.

A council spokesperson said: "The good news is that an innovative solution has now been found. Over the forthcoming weeks, a new air conditioning system will be placed below the existing steps in Market Square. These will be painstakingly removed and then reinstated at their original location. It is expected that audiences attending events in the auditorium will experience the benefits of the new system from September onwards."
