Health Minister Edwin Poots today officially launched Phase 1 of the Allotments project at Kilcooley Square in Bangor.
The aim of the allotments project is to expand movement across Northern Ireland to support the development of community gardens as a means of contributing to sustainable communities, promote community cohesion, and enhance the mental and physical health of community residents.
Speaking at the launch Mr Poots said: "This type of community gardens initiative offers the opportunity for local people to take an active part in the community where they live. It provides a platform for them to learn about their local environment, take part in a scheme that promotes an interest and a sense of pride for their area and build community spirit.
"Schemes such as this have been proven to increase a person’s self esteem and confidence by providing a sense of achievement at the end of a scheduled task, irrespective of ability and circumstances.
"In addition it opens options for employment and the creation of a possible social economy business – producing products for the local community and obtaining income as a result.
"Funded by the Public Health Agency in partnership with Northern Ireland Housing Executive and South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust, this project has transformed one area of Kilcooley Square into a hive of green fingered activity."
To date, 17 of the plots have been let to residents of Kilcooley and to people from across the borough. Community groups have also embedded themselves into the project by leasing plots for their members to get their hands dirty as they plant and grow their produce. The project also provides work placement opportunities for local people who have been long term unemployed, giving them better employment prospects by offering them training.
