Fine Gael Dublin South Central TD, Catherine Byrne, has welcomed more than €4 million in funding allocated to Dublin City Council for a range of sustainable travel projects across the city.
The money is being made available under the National Transport Authority’s Sustainable Transport Programme. It will allow for a range of works to be carried out, including improving footpaths, upgrading bus stops and cycle ways and generally boosting safety and public transport facilities.
She said: "This funding will make a real difference to people working and living in Dublin city centre and its environs, and in particular a number of projects in Dublin South Central are to benefit. I am very encouraged to see that €1 million is being provided for the upgrading of the bus corridor, including footpath improvements on Thomas Street and James Street. This comes just a day after plans were published to improve the appearance of this part of the Liberties, and I am hopeful that this will be the first step in the rejuvenation of this historic area.
"Elsewhere, €50,000 is being provided for the improvement of the bus corridor from Camden Street to Grange Road in Rathfarnham. Improved signage, including directions for urban villages, will make life easier for motorists, with a focus on areas including Chapelizod, Bluebell and Walkinstown.
"It's very welcome that the cycle route along the Grand Canal is to be extended. A new section of the route will link from the west at Blackhorse and from the east at Portobello to provide a continuous route along the canal, which will be of huge benefit to the many people who cycle through the area. A cycling route is also being proposed to link Heuston to the Chapelizod Greenway. A total of €180,000 is being provided for these two worthwhile projects.
"Further improvements will also be carried out at various locations across the city to improve junctions, including the removal of slip lanes, the installation of kerbs and tactile paving for disabled people. All of these measures will help to make our city and its environs safer and easier to navigate."
A total of almost €12 million is being provided for more than 100 projects to improve road, bus, cycle and pedestrian infrastructure in the Greater Dublin Area.
This is a significant investment in public transport and will help to encourage more sustainable ways of travelling.
