Calls For Minister To Resolve The H&S Issues On St Michael's Estate

Sinn Féin housing spokesperson Dessie Ellis TD has called on the Minister for Environment to intervene to support the mediation process to resolve the health and safety issues which has called a halt to the regeneration of St Michaels Estate Inchicore.

Deputy Ellis made his comments last night in the Dáil following a request for a debate on the issue.

Deputy Ellis said: "Recently St. Michael’s Estate Regeneration Board was informed of Dublin City Council’s decision to terminate its contract with BAM contractors. BAM, following a tender process, were awarded the contract in late 2010 to construct Phase 1A of the planned regeneration of St. Michael's Estate in Inchicore. This project was to create 75 vital housing units and a childcare facility for families who have been waiting far too long for regeneration with many upsets.

"It is understood that DCC took the decision to terminate its contract due to concerns regarding health and safety procedures on the site.

"People are angry at yet another delay and they are fearful for their future. St Michael’s has lingered in a terrible state for many years and people have been living with regeneration attempts for nearly 15 years.

"Minister Hogan must seek to support the mediation to bring an end to this confusion and fear and see a speedy resolution to these issues."
