He said: "This news is positive news for Waterford city and county and will lead to better infrastructure which will help the Waterford economy into the future. We are in extremely tough economic times and we in the South East have it tougher than most. News like this, however, will help us to develop our road network which will make us a more attractive place to do business.

"This funding will help Waterford City and County Council maintain, and in some cases, improve the roads over the coming 12 months. Funding for road improvements in Waterford has increased from just under €4 million this time last year, to just under €4.4 million this year. The total allocation for Waterford County Council for roads in 2011 was €8,678,394, this has increased significantly to more than over €9 million for 2012."
