Mac Sharry said: "Despite certain funds being made available last year and the on going preparation of a report by Coastal Process experts in RPS, remedial works have failed and the situation is critical. More damage is being done with every high tide. The Tourist walkway has been effectively washed away and coastal protection rock armour has failed destroying many meters of coastline with a 40 yards long and 100 high of sand dune being destroyed in just one tide in November last.

"As an open Atlantic beach Strand hill has traditionally had the phenomena of shifting sands with ripe currents seasonally removing the sand from the beach. This is different however and if appropriate resources are not immediately allocated the national tourist amenity of Strandhills Sand Dunes, Shelly Valley and the very existence of Strandhill Golf Club are at risk."
Mr Mac Sharry is appealing to Minister Brian Hayes and his department to make sufficient funds available to address the coastal erosion disaster.
