Sinn Fein Calls For Long Kesh Redevelopment

Calls have been made for the development of a conflict resolution centre at the old jail site in Long Kesh with promoters saying it could create jobs.

Sinn Fein MLA Caitríona Ruane said that the redevelopment of the Long Kesh site would not only create jobs but also be a shining example of how the North accepts diversity.

The South Down MLA was speaking ahead of a motion before the Assembly recognising the potential for the site.

"Sinn Fein supports the development of the site. It has the potential to create jobs and being situated just off the main Dublin to Belfast motorway, it is an easily accessible site from Ireland's two main cities.

"The building of a Conflict Resolution Centre can see it become a venue for assisting other troubled parts of the world and also a resource for those researching the Irish Peace Process.

"We need to celebrate diversity and the Long Kesh site is one that has a history that is different to many of us. Respecting each other and each other's history is essential as we move further away from conflict.

"There is a lot of history at the site and it should be developed in order to maximise the economic, historic and reconciliation potential available, this is a site of national and international importance.

"Republicans obviously think of the many people who have gone through the gaol and of course the prisoners struggle for political status. Others including those who worked there also have their story to tell.

"We believe that there are many benefits for the wider community to engage with the history of the gaol but we now need to see work progress and the site developed and open to the public as soon as possible."
