Decrease In Construction Output 'Above Average'

The fall in construction and building output in Ireland was larger than average across the EU, it has been revealed.

Figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) have shown a fall of 6.4% for the industry in the second quarter of 2011.

This also reflects falls in the volume of civil engineering by 3.6%, residential building by 7.2% and non-residential building by 3.0%.


Irish falls were larger than the average across the 27 states in the European Union and the other 17 Euro Area members. Output in the building and construction sector fell by 3% and 5.2% respectively.

The overall change in the value of production for building and construction plummeted by 7.2%.

Meanwhile the volume of output dropped 23.4%, while the value of production fell by 25.6%.

Poland, however, saw an increase of 19.7%, followed by Lithuania with 16.7% and Estonia with 11.5%.

The largest decreases were in Greece, falling by 39.9%, Slovenia by 31.1% and Spain by 27.9%.
