Plans have been approved by Cork City Council for the construction of a mixed use development at the Beamish and Crawford brewery site at south main street, cross’s green, French’s quay and Proby’s quay in the city of Cork.
Designed by architects Scott Tallon Walker, the proposal includes the construction of an event centre/arena measuring 11,339 sq.m. the conservation and change of use of 9,646 sq.m. of protected structure and the extension to same of 2,311 sq.m. for the use, inter alias, as an 8 screen cinema, shops, exhibition areas, restaurants, bars, viewing gallery and artist’s studios.
The scheme also provides for the construction of 2,978 sq.m. of new retail units, the construction of 5,148 sq.m. of new office units, the construction of 10 work/live artist’s studio, the provision of 206 student bed spaces in 46 student apartments, a basement level measuring 2,574 sq.m. incorporating 30 parking spaces, bicycle parking and support services for the development.
The construction of two pedestrian bridges across the south channel of the river lee linking the brewery site to cross’s green and French’s quay/Proby’s quay will also be incorporated into the development.
The development will measure 42,817 sq.m. and will be located on a 1.8 hectare site.
A full design team has been engaged. Main contractor, Bam Building Limited will undertake the main construction work. Work is expected to take in the region of 40 months to complete.
