Government Approves Thornton Hall Prison Project

According to a Governmental review, we understand the proposed development of a new prison at Thornton Hall has received approval, in principle and will now be constructed in three phases. An exact start date for the first phase of the first 400 cells is yet to be determined, however it is envisaged that construction work on the project will be complete during 2014.

Tender for the main buildings works are expected to be sought from contractors during 2012. Tenders are currently being assessed for the appointment of a contractor to undertake construction work on the perimeter wall element of the overall scheme. A main contractor is expected to be appointed in September 2011 for works on the perimeter wall. Work on the perimeter wall is expected to take 12 months to complete. Siac Construction is expected to complete works shortly on the access road element for the development.


The development which will ultimately house up to 2,000 prisoners will be located on a 60 hectare site on a site in Killsallaghan in North County Dublin.
