A new 34-unit social housing development at Lus na Sí, on the Mullagh Road, Miltown Malbay, has been officially opened by the Mayor of Clare Councillor Christy Curtin.
The housing development, which was subject to some delay as a result of the economic downturn, was completed by Guerin & Considine Contractors.
The development consisting of 12 no. 2 bedroom bungalows specifically designed for persons with disabilities and older persons, 12 no. 3 bedroom houses, 8 no. standard 2 bedroom houses and 2 no. 4 bedroom houses was developed to meet the social housing need in the Miltown Malbay area.
This week’s official opening ceremony was attended by Garda Supt Colm O’Sullivan and members of An Garda Síochána, Councillors, Council officials, members of the project team, contractor and residents of the new housing estate.
Mayor of Clare, Cllr Christy Curtin complimented the design and quality of finish as well as the location of the scheme, in close proximity to the town centre and all services.
The Mayor referred to the great community spirit which exists in his native Miltown Malbay, where there are already two other well-established local authority estates.
He acknowledged the good network and participation of the residents of Ballard Road and Church Road. In inviting Ms Claire Darcy, Chairperson of the Residents Association to join with him in the Official Ceremony, the Mayor paid tribute to the residents for forming a Residents Association at such an early stage and for volunteering the time and efforts to ensure a quality living environment.
In response, Claire Darcy expressed the appreciation of the residents to the Council for “providing beautiful homes” and welcomed the opportunity to work in partnership with the Council in maintaining their estate to highest possible standard. Ms Darcy also expressed a keen interest in participating in this year’s Best Kept Local Authority Estates Competition.
Canon Mullen in performing the Blessing, wished the residents happiness in their new homes.
Cllr Patricia McCarthy, Chairperson of the Council’s Housing Strategic Policy Committee welcomed the delivery of an important element of the Council’s Social Housing Investment Programme.
Director of Housing, Social & Cultural Services, Ms Bernadette Kinsella, thanked the completion Design Team, led by the NBA, the Contractor and the Council’s staff involved in the project.
