€30m Allocated For Road Works In Cavan/Monaghan

Local Fianna Fáil TD Margaret Conlon has welcomed confirmation that nearly €30 million is to be invested in improving the road network across Cavan and Monaghan.

The Minister for Transport Pat Carey TD has announced that Cavan County Council will be granted €20.4 million to improve national primary roads, secondary routes and pavements across the county. Monaghan County Council has been allocated €9.1 million for its roads – an increase of €1 million on last year’s allocation.

Deputy Conlon said: "This region has secured significant funding under the National Roads Allocations for 2011. Despite the strain on the public finances, Monaghan has been granted a further €1 million for road works this year. This includes approximately €3.2 million for major works on National Primary Routes, including the Carrickmacross Bypass, the Castleblaney Bypass and the Monaghan Town Bypass.

"These developments will help improve access to the county, helping us attract more investment and boost tourist numbers. They will also help reduce traffic congestion in busy areas, which I know will be most welcome to businesses and homeowners."

"In addition to this, €20.4 million has been granted for road works across County Cavan. A significant chunk of this – nearly €9.4 million – will be spent on construction of the Belturbet Bypass. This is a very important project for the region and it’s been a long time coming. I am delighted that funding has been provided to commence work this year.

"Overall, Cavan County Council is granted €1.3 million for minor road repairs and upgrades, as well improvements to pavements this year. It’s also getting an allocation of €227,000 for safety works."
