Meeting To Discuss Broadway Art Project

A public meeting is being held in west Belfast, to discuss plans for the landmark sculpture being erected on the Broadway roundabout.

RISE will be the biggest public art work in Belfast - a globe-shaped white and silver aluminium sculpture, standing at 123 feet (37.5 metres) high by 98.4 feet (30 metres) wide and will be visible from several miles away.

The illuminated sculpture – made up of two concentric spheres rendered in steel – will be taller than the Albert Clock

With work to install the sculpture due to begin in late February, Belfast City Council has been organising a series of meetings to discuss the project with local residents and community groups.

The latest of these meetings takes place at An Culturlann on Wednesday 19 January, starting at 7.30pm.

The meeting will be addressed by sculptor, Wolfgang Buttress, who won a public competition to design RISE and will talk about his concept and hopes for RISE

Wolfgang said that public consultation has been a vital element of the process to date: "It's been very important to me to engage with local communities and it's been a real pleasure to work with the people of both the lower Falls and the Village areas. The input that has been generated right across the communities, and across the generations, has been invaluable in helping the project to take shape."

To book a place at the meeting, call the Belfast City Council on 90 270426 or email culture@belfastcity.gov.uk

RISE is funded by Belfast City Council, the Department for Social Development (Regeneration Directorate) and the National Lottery through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, and is supported by DRD Roads Service.
