Coleraine Flood Relief Scheme Underway

A £1.3m scheme to halt flooding in Coleraine's town centre is to get under way in late January, 2011.

The Rivers Agency scheme, which will involve new flood alleviation works as well as upgrading existing drainage infrastructure. Environmental and fishery works will also be included and the scheme is set to start on January 17.

Work will take place on Railway Road, Brook Street, Mill House car park, Coleraine Leisure Centre car park and in the vicinity of Anderson Park. Disruption will be kept to a minimum but some diversions will be necessary, according to Rivers Agency as the project is expected to last 10 months.


Meanwhile, all but two councillors have voted to resubmit a revised European fund, (Peace III) bid for Coleraine's Museum project.

At a meeting in Coleraine Borough Council in early January, members were asked to decide on whether or not they wanted to proceed with the project that has already cost over £500,000.

Planning permission has been granted but funding from Peace III was turned down in 2010.

At a meeting in late December, 2010 councillors had to decide whether to re-apply for funding, or terminate the project.

Of the 18 Councillors present they voted in favour of 16-2 to reapply for funding.

The bid, of approximately £3.94m, will include an application for £300,000 of programming funding spread over three years.
