Chemotherapy Unit Ready By January

RoanKabin, Ireland's leading manufacturer of modular and off-site buildings, has won the contract to design and build a new modular pharmacy aseptic compounding unit (chemotherapy) at Waterford Regional Hospital.

The 80sq meter new modular building is an extension to the existing pharmacy department and will provide new Service & Dispatch, Aseptic Support and Aseptic Chemotherapy production facilities.

The building is currently being manufactured at RoanKabin's factory, with an overall construction programme of 12 weeks, and is due for completion in January 2011. The project is RoanKabin's first major contract at Waterford Regional Hospital.

The new facility will enable the current Pharmacy Department at Waterford Regional Hospital to greatly enhance its specialist aseptic/compounding services by providing greater production capabilities for the development of all clinical specialties, requiring Cytotoxic agents and other anti-tumour treatments.

For three decades, RoanKabin has pioneered the use of offsite construction across various sectors in Ireland. The company works with highly specialised subcontractors for the construction of health and laboratory facilities.

"Offsite construction offers a much faster return on investment than traditional construction techniques," said Daniel McEvoy, marketing manager of RoanKabin.

"It is more flexible and has less wastage of materials, which means a safer and cleaner site. Our buildings are manufactured in highly controlled factory conditions and this also translates into significant less disruption on site. We estimate this means 90% fewer vehicle movement, which is extremely important for a project such as this at Waterford Regional Hospital."

McEvoy also highlights the fact that offsite construction allows projects to be delivered on time and within budget, one of the main pitfalls of traditional construction techniques.
