NI Housing Chief Executive To Retire

Four decades on, Paddy McIntyre, the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE) boss has announced his retirement from service to local housing.

From a trainee with the Northern Ireland Housing Trust in 1971 to Chief Executive of the NIHE in 1999, Paddy has had a long and distinguished career in housing.

During the past 40 years he has seen housing conditions in Northern Ireland improve dramatically. In 1974 almost 20% of homes were deemed unfit to live in while today that figure stands at only 2.4%.

NIHE Chairman, Brian Rowntree said: "Paddy has shown dedicated leadership and utmost professionalism throughout his career. Through some very challenging times he has been responsible for the delivery of valuable services which have made a difference to communities and the lives of people across Northern Ireland. His commitment over the years to individuals and teams of staff is a credit to him.

"On a personal level, I am indebted to him for his encouragement and support. His knowledge and expertise in housing has been invaluable. He has forged links on housing matters right across the UK and further afield and is a respected ambassador for social housing."

NI Social Development Minister, Alex Attwood said: "The Housing Executive has been one of the great success stories of Northern Ireland over the last four decades. There are thousands and thousands of people for whom housing conditions have been transformed. The Housing Executive has served Northern Ireland well.

"Paddy McIntyre has been a central figure in the success of the Housing Executive and in changing the housing conditions of so many. I would like to acknowledge his years of service and thank him for his big contribution."
