There have been further fines over illegal dumping as the NI Department of the Environment continues to get tough on the issue.
Two south Down building contractor brothers were made the subject of confiscation orders of £10,000 each at Newry Crown Court for illegal waste offences this week.
John Taylor ,48, from Mayobridge and George Taylor, 50, of Greenan, trading as Taylor Civil Engineering, were also fined £550 in relation to the illegal deposit of 250 tonnes of construction and demolition waste (including concrete, brick, wood and wiring) at a site owned by George Taylor on the Greenan Road, Greenan.
The court made the confiscation orders under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 in relation to benefit from criminal conduct. This has to be paid within 12 months.
Meanwhile, a Rostrevor businessman is to pay £16,900 for illegal waste offences.
The Co Down man was made the subject of a confiscation order of £16,400 at Newry Crown Court for illegal waste offences.
Fergal McAlinden, 53, from Rostrevor, pleaded guilty to one charge of depositing controlled waste without a licence and was fined £500 in a case that involved over 7,000 tonnes of waste soil and clay.
The court made the confiscation order under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 in relation to benefit from his criminal conduct. This also has to be paid within 12 months.
