It has been revealed that wastewater treatment works are likely to expand to full capacity at Ringsend.
This is following an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) by Dublin City Council (DCC) announced last week.
Environmental Impact Assessment by DCC now looks set to advise extension of treatment systems with €74m funding
Extending the existing treatment systems on the Ringsend site, combined with a sea outfall discharge, appear to be the most beneficial option for increasing the capacity of the Ringsend Wastewater Treatment Works.
This would involve the construction of an alternative discharge point approximately 10 kilometres offshore due east of Dublin, which will meet with all EU and Irish discharge standards from the existing Works and from the proposed extension.
Some €74 million was earmarked over as part of the recently published 2010 – 2012 Water Services Investment Programme.
The EIA will include an analysis of the environmental impacts of a number of extension options and there will be public consultation before the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is completed and submitted to An Bord Pleanála for approval, in the second half of 2010.
The 2005 Study also recommended that a new regional Wastewater Treatment Works should be constructed in North Co Dublin.
Fingal County Council is progressing the treatment works in North Co Dublin, through the Planning Stage and in 2008 Dublin City Council appointed CDM (Ireland) as Consultants to progress the Ringsend Wastewater Treatment Works Extension Project.
