Interface Roundabout Makeover Completed

An interface area in Belfast has been given an extensive facelift.

The Ardoyne roundabout has been completely transformed, with the removal of unsightly concrete blocks, or 'dragon’s teeth'. In their place there is now a landscaped island with decorative granite units, shrubbery and plants.

Additional work, including the replacement of directional signage bollards at the exits from the roundabout complement the new roundabout island and further improve the appearance and safety of this busy junction.

The project was being carried out as part of Belfast City Council’s ongoing 'Renewing the Routes' programme, which aims to improve neighbourhoods by enhancing the key arterial routes leading into the city centre. Every scheme in the programme is carried out with the full cooperation and involvement of the local communities concerned.

The improvement works at the roundabout are in addition to the recent shop front improvement scheme that was completed at the adjoining Ardoyne shops. This project saw a number of shops benefit from external enhancements that included new signage, lighting, tiling and painting.

The 'Renewing the Routes' programme also has completed a series of other regeneration projects along Crumlin Road and along the arterial routes of North and West Belfast.

The scheme is a partnership initiative between the council and the Department for Social Development, through the Belfast Regeneration Office, the Northern Ireland Housing Executive and the Belfast Area Partnership Boards
